Mom Approved Interview - Jill Harris

Jill Harris is a dedicated therapist with a passion for working with children and teens. Currently pursuing her Play Therapist License, Jill brings creativity, compassion, and collaboration to every session. Her journey in the mental health field is shaped by her love for supporting people, her belief in the resilience of children, and her dedication to creating safe environments for her clients. She strives to empower children and families with tools that foster growth, healing, and lasting positive change.

How long have you been practicing?
I practiced for 2 years, then took a 7-year break. I’ve now been back for 3 years, making a total of 5 years in practice.

What populations do you specialize in (children, families, couples, etc.)?
I primarily work with children and teens.

What inspired you to become a therapist?
I have always enjoyed working with children, but I fully knew this was my calling after returning to the field.

What keeps you passionate about it?
Seeing those “aha” moments and hearing about the growth clients experience. The magic of play therapy truly inspires me.

What therapeutic approaches or techniques do you often use?
Play therapy, sand tray, and Adlerian therapy, always meeting kids where they are and addressing their unique needs.

If someone is nervous to meet you for the first time, what would you want them to know?
I’m a safe person for both the child and the parent. I want us to be a team, because you know your child best, and I will always honor that.

How would you describe your therapy style in three words?
Collaborative, understanding, supportive.

What do you hope clients feel when they walk out of a session with you?
Encouraged and understood.

What’s one common misconception about therapy you wish clients understood?
That therapy isn’t about me “fixing” problems, clients already hold the answers. My role is to help them discover and access those answers.

How do you incorporate creativity, play, or outside-the-box methods into sessions?
I often use pretend play, role play, and play therapy techniques to engage children in ways that feel natural and meaningful.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned from your clients that has stayed with you?
My clients have taught me that children’s resilience runs deeper than we often realize, they carry strength and creativity within them, even in hard times.

How has being a therapist changed the way you view relationships, family, or community?
It has deepened my appreciation for connection and reminded me of the importance of support systems and being present with people.

What brings you joy or gives you energy on hard days
My faith sustains me. I also remind myself that even when I don’t see the outcome right away, I may still be making a lasting impact on someone’s life.

What do you enjoy doing outside of counseling?
Reading, spending time outdoors on low-intensity hikes, and being part of my church community.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering therapy, what would it be?
Allow yourself to be open and vulnerable, and trust the process. If something feels uncomfortable, like oversharing, we can talk through it together.

What separates HGC from other practices, and why should a client choose a therapist at HGC?
The counselors here truly want the best for one another. We celebrate each other’s successes and support one another’s growth, which creates a strong, caring environment for clients.

What is your favorite part about working with the master’s level interns and associates at Hope and Growth Center?
I love sharing in their joy, excitement, and the sense of magic that comes with learning and growing as a therapist.
